Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is $5 billion short of becoming the richest person on Earth, according to The New York Observer.
Bezos’ net worth reportedly totals about $84.6 billion, putting him within distance of Microsoft founder Bill Gates’s estimated $89.3 billion.
Charitable organizations on Monday greeted news of Bezos’ growing fortune by highlighting their causes on Twitter.
The Observer reported that Bezos, who is also Amazon’s CEO and chairman, has seen has wealth rise approximately $1.8 billion since last Friday.
Amazon’s stock purportedly surged following the tech company’s $13.7 billion deal to buy grocery store chain Whole Foods that day, pending regulatory and shareholder approval.
The company’s acquisition of Whole Foods is its largest since Amazon purchased Twitch, a video gaming community, and service platform, in 2014 for $970 million.
Bezos also owns The Washington Post, which last week announced its website had 80.7 million unique visitors in May, an increase of 28 percent from the same month in 2016.
The Post additionally reported that its website’s page views exceeded 1 billion last month, citing comScore, a 33 percent rise since May of last year.
